Newly arrived in the Brazilian market , Samsung Odyssey G40 gaming monitor is available in 25 and 27-inch versions. In this case, it is not a 4K Ultra HD or curved screen that delights us, as is the case with the Odyssey Neo G8 and the Odyssey Neo G7 , but an IPS panel, the rate of 240 Hz and of course, the viewing angle of 178º , capable of offering competitive advantages in some games.

design
Even though it is a somewhat compact option among gaming monitors, both versions of the Odyssey G40 occupy an imposing space, whatever the environment. The differences between the models are in the weight, dimension and size of the panel; all other features are the same. The robustness is found in all the constructive elements of the device, from the flat screen with a back full of lines in a pattern that guarantees texture and adornment in the center in blue , to the stem and base that complement the premium look.
The adornment is a kind of optional ornament that comes in the package to be fitted to the monitor before attaching to the pole. With it, the base insert is hidden, in addition to being a beautiful detail on the back of the machine. Contrary to its strong appearance, the device is not heavy: 3.6 kg when handling it without the base. Placed on the pedestal, it totals 5.3 kg. This contributes to quick and easy preparation and allocation .
The edges are almost imperceptible when the device is observed from the front, giving prominence to the screen, which takes advantage of almost 100% of the surface. The exception is the lower edge, which is a little more robust. In it, there are two spaces that appear to be speakers or even refrigerators, but are only part of the monitor’s visual construction. As usual, the Samsung logo is centered there and with a brushed finish.
The height of the device draws attention, promoted by the long stem that leaves the screen about a palm and a half away from the base. Inside the rod, there is an internal iron that works as a counterweight, eliminating the fear of falling. All these elements make it impossible for the Odyssey G40 to go unnoticed!
screen and sound
The Full HD maximum resolution is competent but fails to meet part of the target audience, especially those players who have a super powerful PC, capable of taking all the settings to the maximum, along with ray tracing and other resources.
However, the main focus of the Odyssey G40 is not the resolution, but the fluidity of the image . With an insanely fast 240Hz refresh rate and 1 millisecond response time , this gaming monitor immediately redeems itself for limiting resolution quality. Combined, these features ensure minimal lag when playing games.
Add to that the Ultrawide Game View function , which adjusts the screen so that the playback is at a 21:9 aspect ratio. It provides an even greater expansion of the player’s field of vision. On the physical side, the ergonomic stand helps the user to make adjustments such as tilting or rotating the screen.
The set of these features is ideal for those who play in competitive modes – such as CS:GO, Overwatch, Call of Duty , among others, as the image performance reaches the level of perfection in synchronization and response, without the risk of crashes or tearing of the screen. Image. During tests, I’m not a big fan of games like this, I asked some friends to play while I watched. Incredible image! For console games, with me at the helm of the Xbox Series X , there’s no need to prolong it: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Batman: Arkham Knight and other titles were a treat for the eyes.
There’s also an Eye Saver mode that optimizes visual comfort by reducing blue light emissions on this screen that has a maximum brightness of 400nits and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1.
The fact that it supports AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-SYNC makes it even more attractive to gamers as it is the technologies that prevent screen-tearing from occurring. How do they do it? Decreasing the frequency difference between the video card and monitor, that is, making them both operate at the same pace — a function that serves the most demanding gamers, even if, in the end, the resolution still distances them.
As nothing is perfect, it is necessary to mention the biggest negative point of the Odyssey 40: the lack of sound output. Well, there are users who even prefer devices in this category not to have speakers, however, I believe that this is not the majority of consumers looking for a gaming monitor. Even more so if there are comparisons with other products available on the market. With a good headset or headphone , the experience remains ideal.
connections
Even before connecting the console or PC, we have already come across a super positive point that is the vertical input ports , making the cables aligned downwards. This is nice because in this position, the strands take less damage. You may have to lift the monitor to get a better view when installing, but that’s good for the cables, believe me.
There are two HDMI 2.0 inputs available , as well as a DisplayPort 1.2 and a 3.5mm headphone jack . The DC19V port receives the power cord. When turning on the monitor, the Auto Source Switch+ feature automatically identifies which was the last source connected to it, playing it back.
We consider the Odyssey G40 to be well equipped to host both PC and console games. Finally, there is the presence of a USB port , which can be used to charge a smartphone or controller, for example.
Conclusion
If the subject is competence in general and ergonomics, the Samsung Odyssey G40 monitor can already be considered one of the best options among gamers monitors available in Brazil. Even in an environment lit by natural daylight, it was possible to play without shading from different angles, and also without the need to close the curtains.
It is worth noting that this will be a great purchase for gamers , due to the highly interesting use for games. After all, having an expanded field of vision is a great competitive advantage. For other purposes, such as watching movies and series, for example, it can be frustrating due to the lack of speakers. Therefore, it is not a multipurpose product.
That’s it, if you like to spend hours playing online with friends in competitive modes, this is the monitor you need!
The tested version was the 25-inch one, being the most recommended because of the value, which has already dropped a little since its arrival in the Brazilian market. The Odyssey G40 25” is available at Magazine Luiza for R$2,321.10. The 27-inch version costs R$2,699 at Girafa .
